Michael Estrin’s life is a funny story, and so he writes about it, primarily in novels and creative nonfiction.
For adults, Michael writes slacker noir—a mashup of stoner comedy and detective fiction. Michael based NotSafe for Work, the first novel in his Porn Valley mystery series, on his time as a reporter at adult entertainment’s second best trade publication. His first novel, Murder and OtherDistractions, tells the story of an apathetic clickbait writer who becomes entangled in a bizarro murder investigation. It’s loosely based on Michael’s experience writing on, for, and about the internet in the first decade of this millennium.
For the young and young at heart, Michael writes on Wattpad, the world’s largest social reading platform. Michael’s stories are about boys learning to be better men. In 2018, Michael won his second Watty Award for Peter’s Little Peter. His latest YA story, Hamburger Hamlet, is an April, 2021 Wattpad Editor’s pick. He is a member of the Wattpad Stars program.
To capture the comedy of life’s mundane moments Michael writes creative nonfiction. He began sharing these stories on Facebook in 2015, but recently moved to a Sunday newsletter he calls Situation Normal. In 2019, Michael published Ride / Share, a collection of vignettes about his absurd, joyful, and sometimes, heartfelt experiences with Lyft drivers. His personal essays have been published in Vox, Narratively, and Tablet.
While gathering string for his stories, Michael has pivoted from law, clickbait, porn journalism, mainstream journalism, and screenwriting—twice. He lives in Los Angeles with his amazing wife, Christina, and their shiftless layabout of a dog, Mortimer.
